Overview
As in other concrete products the environmental impact of precast concrete decreases with the Portland cement content, GCP concrete contains no OPC.
The manufacturing process of cement and sourcing of raw materials are the key to the ‘green credentials of the product. GCP have developed a system of manufacture that improves on the EcoPoint score of the process and materials used thus feeding the green rating for the concrete produced. The result is a low carbon concrete substitute for the construction industry.
The concrete is specifically designed to reduce the environmental impact down to a minimum producing a concrete that can be lighter than traditional concrete but does not lose the beneficial characteristics and wins with a greatly reduced carbon footprint. GCP’s recycling and technology making the difference! Green Concrete Products Ltd has rigorously tested different forms of Green Concrete to fulfil the demands of the global construction industry. Buildings, paving, kerbs and drainage products that will be compliant to the required BS and ISO standard in summer 2013.
A major investment into a state of the art manufacturing facility dedicated to Green Concrete Products will be in operation by Q1 2014. The plant will be the most environmentally friendly concrete manufacturing process in Europe using a combined heat and power (CHP) supply and operating a EMS (Environmental Management System) based on the principles of ISO 14001 focusing on best practice in H&S, environmental and social responsibility.
Existing methods
Excluding imported steel and locally produced concrete the most common materials are wood and locally manufactured bricks. Both materials use huge reserves of forest.
The brick manufacture requires clay to be fired in large open kilns (clamps) resulting in deforestation on a major scale.
